FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE. Sydney, Australia 2 March 2011
On Tuesday, 8th March 2011 VIVO Café is throwing open the doors to every woman of Sydney in a bid to return the International Women’s Day celebration to its origins and bring it back to the ordinary woman.
Angela Vithoulkas, CEO of VIVO, multi-award-winning business woman and renowned keynote speaker, feels that this day should be celebrated by every woman and is too important to keep behind closed doors at exclusive corporate breakfasts and lunches.
“A hundred years ago when the proletariat in Russia were fighting for the right to vote, the concept of International Women’s Day was born,” she says. “It wasn’t exclusive, it was women standing up for their right to be considered an important part of society, and I think that element of International Women’s Day has been lost a little over time, especially in the way that it’s honoured.”
“We have certainly come a long way and there are many achievements of notable women to be celebrated, but at the end of the day ordinary women are making a significant contribution to society and that’s what we want to celebrate on the 8th March at VIVO.”
In-keeping with the relaxed and open theme, there is no set time for this celebration. It is an all-day event that allows participants to join in the fun when their schedule allows them to.
“We’re giving people the option of dropping in whenever they can fit it in, by themselves, with a girlfriend or with a big group. That’s the beauty of this event,” says Angela, “it’s designed to fit in exactly with your plans.”
The ticket price is $10, the total of which will be donated to UN Women (formerly UNIFEM) and participants will receive a free glass of sparkling, be treated to chocolate tastings and have the chance to win an on-the-spot mini manicure, in purple, of course.
The event came about through the collaboration of Angela, Gaye Crispin of Women on Top Business Planning and Champagne Jayne, champagne author, speaker and independent effervescent expert. Over coffee the three women came to the conclusion that there was something missing in the celebration of this day and that, for the centenary year, they needed to create something a little different.
Champagne Jayne will be uncorking some of her own favourite champagne cuvees on the day to share with special guests from the worlds of music, business, magazines and literature, who will dropping in to share in the celebration.
“We have asked several people to join us who we feel embody the spirit of the day, and not just women, says Angela. “After all, without the support of fathers, husbands, partners and, in my case, brothers, the successes we achieve may not be possible.”
The celebrations will begin when VIVO opens its doors for business on Tuesday, 8th March and will continue on throughout the day.
